Charlotte NC

Charlotte, the largest city of North Caroline, has the thrill of a metropolitan city as well as the simplicity of the Southern charm. It has a unique atmosphere, where simple home appeal meets big city style. It is nicknamed as the Queen City, after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg, the wife of King George II of the United Kingdoms. During the American Revolution, General Cornwallis, a British commandant occupied Charlotte, but was very soon driven out of the city by the residents in opposition to the British rule. Seeing the resistance of the residents, Cornwallis famously wrote that Charlotte is an honest nest of rebellion. This observation of the general gave one more name to Charlottes, the Honesty’s Nest.

History and Religion

Charlotte is the birthplace of Billy Graham. Most of the people of charlotte are protestant Christian, and due to this there are numerous churches in the city. The city is locally known as the city of churches. Throughout history, Presbyterian churches were the most dominant, but with present day rapid increase in the population, the scene has changed as people of different faith have settled in the city. Various organizations such as SIM Mission and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association have made their home in Charlotte. In total, there are about 700 places of worship in Charlotte.

Economy of Charlotte

Since 1990, Charlotte’s economy is continuously growing and presently it is dominated by retail commerce and financial services. The city has emerged as the fastest growing large cities in the US. Charlotte is one of the major financial centers of the United States. It is home to two of the prestigious financial institutions of the country, Bank of America and Wachovia. The headquarter of the Bank of America and other regional banks are located in the uptown of financial district. Charlotte is also one of the major centers of the country’s motor sports industry.

Architecture and Places of Interest

In the last two decades there has been a mushroom growth of skylines. This growth is driven by the existence of the headquarters of various popular financial institutions in the city. Between Philadelphia and Atlanta, Bank of America Corporate center of Charlotte is the tallest building. Post-modern gothic Tower, which stands 871 feet tall, is another important skyscraper of Charlotte.

Tourist attractions in Charlotte

Charlotte offers numerous destinations for tourists. There are scores of museums, art centers, theatres and parks. Some of the famous museums of Charlotte are Carolina Aviation Museum, the Carolina Museum of History, and Discovery Plaza, which is a science museum as well as IMAX Theatre. A few popular theaters and art centers are the Comedy Theatre, Blumethal Performing Art Center and Children’s Theatre of Carolina. The famous parks and farms of the city are Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, Historic Ltta Plantation, Historic Rosedale Plantation and Historic Rural Hill Farm.

Charlotte is well connected by air. Charlotte International Airport, as measured by traffic is the world’s 11th busiest airport. Several domestic and international flights operate from here. The airport is the largest home of US Airways. Lufthansa and Air Canada operate form the city’s airport.
